Overview of Services

Mission.  The mission of the Metabolomics Core Facility is to provide the research community with cutting-edge expertise and services for sensitive, precise, and accurate measurement of metabolites using mass spectrometry-based technologies.






  • Amino Acids (30): Absolute quantitation of the 18 proteogenic amino acids and 12 related molecules. (See list below)
  • Organic Acids (8): Absolute quantitation of 8 organic acids. (See list below)
  • Glutathione (2): Absolute quantitation of reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione.
  • Polyamines (14): Absolute quantitation of 14 polyamines. (See list below)
  • DNA Damage Metabolites (6): Absolute quantitation of 6 DNA damage metabolites. (See list below)
  • Anionic Metabolites by IC-MS (80): Relative quantitation of metabolites associated primarily with glycolysis, TCA cycle, and pentose phosphate pathway.
  • Stable Isotope Tracer Analysis: Measurement of stable isotope incorporation into targeted metabolites (assays above) downstream of a chosen tracer metabolite. Multiplexed, multi-tracer analysis is available.



  • Profiling (complete): Relative quantitation of metabolites from multiple fractions.
  • Lipidomic Profiling: Relative quantitation of multiple classes of lipid metabolites from nonpolar fractions.
  • Hyaluronic Acid Profiling: Relative quantitation of hyaluronic acid oligomers.
  • Tracer Analysis: Measurement of stable isotope incorporation into non-targeted metabolites downstream of a chosen tracer metabolite.  Multiplexed, multi-tracer analysis is available.


     Other Services

  • Redox Metabolism Assays: Relative quantitation of ROS (H2O2) using a microplate (96-well) assay.
  • Mechanism of Action Studies: Assistance with pharmacological experiments to determine an agent's mechanism of action by integrating pharmacological endpoints (e.g., cell viability) with metabolomic and other omic data.
  • Sample Preparation Assistance: Assistance with or full-service provision of sample preparation. For example, you can ship cells and treatment(s), we can work together to design an experiment, and we can conduct the entire experiment.


Data Analysis:

  • Data Analysis: Many of the reports generated by our facility are time-consuming to assemble; we add a data analysis fee of $250 for reports that require 1-4 h of effort. Expertise includes bioinformatics, statistics, pathway analysis, and/or assistance preparing materials for manuscripts or presentations. Many data types accepted (genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, pharmacological, etc.).
  • Drug Combination Analysis: We have developed software for conducting 3-D response surface and response envelope analyses of drug combinations for the statistical determination of synergy, additivity, or antagonism. (Please contact Phil Lorenzi to discuss)
